I love hometown gems, the ones that in-the-know locals love, and out-of-towners may never know even existed. Pulling up to Rushing Duck feels like going to a speakeasy. Going to the tail end of Main Street in Chester, by the converted railroad station cycling trail, is a mustard yellow warehouse building. Around back, a single door branded “RD”.
Inside is small, but can be full of those wise, beer-levin’ locals. A bar is manned by friendly staff, and a brewery cat! Dogs are welcome to join their parents in some beer swilling, making the atmosphere all the better. Being at Rushing Duck feels like being at a friend’s party.
Staples like Dad’s Breath, Naysayer Pale Ale and War Elephant are accompanied by rotating experimental brews as well as a seasonal favorite. Flights are offered at $7 for 5 two ounce servings, solo sample 2oz sizes for $2, pints for $4 and growlers around $12-$16 depending on the brew. Do a flight to get a full understanding of their awesome beers, then get a pint and enjoy yourself. Food is not served here, but you are more than welcome to bring some in yourself. I like to have a few pre-dinner drinks before going to one of my local favorite restaurants for dinner.
There are cans and growlers for sale, for when you inevitably want to bring some of their majestic brews home, as well as t-shirts and pint glasses. Overall, expect friendly customers and staff, a relaxed and fun atmosphere, and great cheap beer. Bring your pup, some grub, and have a great time!
