As a native of Putnam County myself, I can say that this county is sparse when it comes to new dining establishments. Westchester seems to have taken all of the talent, and only the bold have ventured out to red-sauce Italian territory of the upper end of the Metro North. Putnam county native chef Tommy Stevens, who you may recognize of Hell’s Kitchen and Cutthroat Kitchen fame, is one of those bold chefs.

Patterson opened it’s newest restaurant, Iron & Wine, in early December 2016. Boasting it’s cuisine as “comfort food and tapas”, there is the traditional Spanish flair as well as more recognizable dishes. The interior has nods to it’s Spanish roots, with some eclectic flair. The restaurant itself overlooks a driving range and has a small but lovely patio shaded with a trellis. The staff is extraordinarily friendly, which is a nice reprieve from the stuffy tapas restaurants popping up all over the country. You can expect to see the owner and chef making his rounds, ensuring the smooth flow of the restaurant.

Each table is adorned with Super Stevens Bros hot sauces, a project of the chef with its own Etsy shop. Both are tolerable and flavorful, though spiceheads may want something a bit more pungent. The menu boasts a wide range of tapas, heavy on seafood but with more continental options like beef carpaccio, short rib tacos, and duck confit quesadillas. The stars of the “large plates” section of the menu are the paellas. I opted for the Paella Negra for two, with chorizo, ahi tuna, shrimp, mussels and squid ink. It did not disappoint with fresh and expertly cooked seafood, and perfect rice. Perfectly cooked rice is under appreciated, so kudos to Iron and Wine for knocking it our of the park. The drink menu is well rounded, with a variety of craft brews, wines and craft cocktails. All the wines are priced at $9 a glass and the cocktails $12.

I’m so happy and proud that there is finally a restaurant to boast about in my home county and hope that it spurs the opening of more creative restaurants. They have an active social media presence between Facebook and Instagram, but they do lack a formal website, but current menus and specials can be found on Facebook.
